FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BACK PAIN: DIAGNOSING TESTS AND WEIGHT PROBLEMS
I am a 49-year-old teacher. I fractured my back while roller skating with my students. It has been almost four months since the accident, and I am having a difficult time healing. I am still in a great deal of pain. Is it possible that I have osteoporosis, and what tests would be done to diagnosis my problem
If you fell when you injured the back, the fall alone may have been severe enough to cause a fracture. However, since you are a 49-year-old woman, there would also be some concern about the possibility of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). There are no signs or feelings of osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. If you have osteoporosis, then this fracture may be a clue that you should begin treatment that might prevent future fractures, especially a hip fracture.
Check the list of risk factors for osteoporosis. You are over 40, female, and have had a fracture. It may be a good idea to have a bone density test, which is a safe and accurate way to tell whether osteoporosis is present. If you are affected, start now to prevent future fractures.
I am a 52-year-old attorney with chronic back pain. My internist gave me one prescription: lose weight! I need to lose around 50 pounds, but how do I start Should I do anything else for treatment
In most cases of chronic back pain, control of weight can be helpful. It would be important to know whether other specific causes of the pain are present that can be treated and removed. Your extra 50 pounds can certainly be increasing the stress on your back.
Weight loss, especially loss of 50 pounds, can be intimidating. Try to have a goal of loss of 1/2 to one pound per week using the new Food Guide Pyramid created by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. The most painless way to lose weight is to choose a low-calorie diet that is livable – no less than 1,400 calories per day. Keep your calorie intake strictly controlled, and begin to use more calories by walking or another simple exercise. If you don’t lose 1/2 to one pound per week, walk longer distances until you do.
Slow weight loss is more likely to be longer lasting than a quick weight loss of 15 to 20 pounds in the first month. You would benefit from asking a dietician or your physician to help you make a safe and effective plan for losing this amount of weight.
Along with weight loss, exercises to increase the strength of the back would be important. Check your work situation to be sure that improper desk or work height is not putting excess stress on the back. Are you using chairs that don’t give proper back support Do your chairs fit the desk correctly The time you spend at a desk can increase back pain.
