WOMEN AND OSTEOPOROSIS: ARE YOU AT RISK FROM OSTEOPOROSIS

According to some estimates as many as one in three women will suffer from osteoporosis. It’s difficult to know quite what that means. Most women (and men) will suffer some bone mass loss as they age. But in reality it’s hard to predict who will be so severely affected that they suffer fractures. Osteoporosis is said to have reached ‘epidemic’ proportions. But how many people do you actually know who suffer from it Many people suffer bone mass loss without it being a problem. There are, however, some known factors that seem to indicate higher than average risk of severe bone mass loss and fractures in later life. These factors are: heredity, premature menopause, inactivity, smoking, alcohol and coffee, drugs and medicines, irregular periods, weight and faulty digestion.

Heredity
Heredity is now believed to be a major factor in osteoporosis. Advances in research have shown that a number of inherited genes may put some women at greater risk. The latest scientific breakthrough has come from comparing sets of non-identical with identical twins. Identical twins have exactly the same genes – non-identical twins do not. So it’s possible to isolate genetic factors from environmental and other differences when comparing medical histories. Research is in the early stages but it is suspected that one defective gene may prevent the body from using vitamin D efficiently, while another may prevent the absorption of oestrogen. Many experts have believed for some time that a woman whose mother (or father) has osteoporosis may be at higher risk herself. But although you were born with an inherited constitution, your own lifestyle and diet can weaken or strengthen your inherited health characteristics.

Premature menopause
A premature menopause is one that occurs before the age of forty, but it can happen to women in their twenties. There may be no definite cause but it can be due to radiotherapy given to treat cancer or to surgical removal of the ovaries because of disease. In a premature or surgical menopause the oestrogen levels fall off sharply instead of undergoing the gradual decline you normally expect at menopause. The sudden low levels of oestrogen may be linked to a greater risk of osteoporosis.
