alt="Zyloprim (Allopurinol)">WATER-SOLUBLE VITAMINS: VITAMIN 6
Functions
Three forms of vitamin B6 exist: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine. The functions of vitamin B6 are closely related to protein metabolism: the synthesis and breakdown of amino acids; the conversion of tryptophan to niacin; the production of antibodies; the formation of heme in hemoglobin; the formation of hormones important in brain function; and others.
Meeting daily needs
More vitamin B6 is required when diets are high in protein. The adult allowance is 2.0 mg for women and 2.2 mg for men.
Meat, especially organ meats, whole-grain cereals, soybeans, peanuts, and wheat germ are rich sources. Milk and green vegetables supply smaller amounts.
Clinical problems
Several drugs interfere with the use of vitamin -Isoniazid used for the treatment of tuberculosis binds vitamin B6 so that it cannot be utilized by the body. If the intake of vitamin B6 is not increased, neurologic problems may occur. Penicillamine, a drug used in the treatment of Wilson’s disease, and renal dialysis increase the loss of the vitamin in the urine. In these conditions supplements of vitamin B6 are recommended. Blood levels of vitamin B6 are lowered in pregnancy and with the use of contraceptives. Although supplements restore the blood levels to a normal range, there has been no clear-cut evidence that there is any change in physiologic state.
Some years ago vitamin B6 deficiency was diagnosed in infants who had received a formula in which vitamin B6 had been inadvertently destroyed by high heat. These infants had a reduced growth rate, nervous irritability, anemia, and convulsions; they recovered promptly when adequate vitamin was provided. Today all commercial infant formulas supply sufficient vitamin B6 to meet the infant’s needs.
