COLDS AND FLU: WAYS TO MAKE YOURSELF MORE COMFORTABLE
But rest the flu. While regular exercise may be good for colds, it’s not so great for flu. Experts say that overexerting yourself can allow flu viruses to do even deeper damage such as invading muscles. Before returning to your exercise routine, it’s best to wait two weeks after your symptoms are gone.
If you’re not sure you’re ready to resume your usual activities, then you’re probably not. “Most of these illnesses respond to rest,” says Dr. Fleming. “So if you get sick, if you feel bad, then reststay down. Rest is much better than being active.”
Wet the air. In winter when the furnace is cranked up and the humidity’s low, your throat, nasal passages and lungs can get dry and scratchy. Adding moisture to the air with a vaporizer or moisturizer will help keep your airways lubed.
Give them the brush-off. Viruses can survive for hours outside the body, as can bacteria. Both can linger on your toothbrush. “It’s not the virus but the bacterial infection that can make a cold or flu last longer. I encourage individuals to throw out their toothbrush if they’ve had an illness,” says Dr. Debin. “Get a new toothbrush so you’re not reinfecting yourself.”
Soothe your sore throat. While over-the-counter medicated lozenges will help relieve sore throat pain, just sucking on hard candy, which stimulates the flow of saliva, can also be helpful. Experts also recommend gargling with a solution made from one to three teaspoons of salt in a glass of warm water. Drinking warm liquids, like tea with honey and lemon, can help, too, says Dr. Fleming.
Turn up the heat. Hot peppers contain a fiery substances called capsaicin, which will cause the mucous membranes to secrete more liquidone of the body’s ways of eliminating viruses. So when illness strikes, make your favorite cuisine extra hot.
Try chicken soup. All over the globe, hot chicken soup is the home remedy of choice for colds. While any hot liquid can help cut through congestion, chicken soup seems to do the job best. Not only does it get mucus flowing, but researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center found it also inhibits the action of neutrophils, blood cells that cause nasal congestion and discomfort.
Blow gently. Remember, it’s a nose, not a trombone. If you honk with all your might, you could blast the infection back into your ears or sinuses, making a minor illness even worse. Instead, blow your nose gently, one nostril at a time.
Take to the C. Scientists have long debated whether or not vitamin C is helpful in combating colds. In a summary of 18 scientific studies, however, the British Journal of Nutrition concluded that vitamin C may in fact help shorten a cold’s duration and help reduce the symptoms.
It’s not clear how much vitamin C is the optimal dose. Subjects in the studies typically took 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams a day. A more conservative approach is to increase the amount of vitamin C in your diet. Drinking about five glasses a day of juiceorange, tomato, grapefruit or pineapplewill provide 500 milligrams of vitamin Ca safe and effective amount, says Dr. Fleming. Other high-C foods include broccoli, brussels sprouts and strawberries.
