NUTRITION BASICS FOR MEN: PREVENTING THE DRAIN – ADAPT TO THE SITUATION AND FOLLOW THE FAMILY TREE
Adapt to the situation. The days are long gone (if indeed they ever existed) in which men could count on sitting down to dinner at the same time every day and being served a healthy variety of meat, potatoes and vegetables. Today work and meals are often commingled, and not always under the best circumstances. But you can still eat well.
Attending a business reception Don’t hover over the chips like an upright vacuum. Instead, think raw vegetables: carrots, broccoli and celery. And go easy on the dips; they’re generally loaded with unhealthy fats. If you’re going to be in the car all day, toss a few apples on the seat. You can even keep a bag of pretzels in a desk drawer. The goal isn’t necessarily to eat perfectly every day but to eat well enough that you don’t get desperate and turn to fatty, high-calorie snacks instead.
Follow the family tree. Experts agree that many chronic diseasesdiabetes, heart disease and cancer, to name just a feware genetically programmed. That is, the “blueprint” for trouble is already written. But it often takes a “trigger” for the disease to occurand that trigger, in many cases, is diet, says Dr. Herbert.
So make careful notes of all the health problems in your family. Then ask your doctor what dietary changes you need to make that will do the most good. For example, if every man in your family has had a heart attack by age 60, you’re going to want to be particularly vigilant about not getting too much dietary fat, says Dr. Herbert. Be proactive. If your doctor can’t answer all your questions, ask him where to go for more information, says Dr. Curran-Celentano.
