LIVING A DYNAMIC, ACTIVE LIFE AFTER HEART ATTACK: THE EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION
Exercise is an essential element in the recovery process. This is your life we’re talking about. Get to know more about the exercise prescription and how to make it an integral part of your life.
What we have here is a circular path. We start off with what has to be viewed as a medical prescription; in order to recover, you have to follow the medical prescription of exercise. Yet this same exercise will enable us to live a dynamic, active life, free of the limitations that hindered heart patients in the past.
Rather than viewing your exercise prescription entirely as something you have to do because your doctor told you so, start thinking about it as the way you’re going to improve your life. It truly will do that it will improve your life beyond your wildest expectations.
It’s no accident or coincidence that virtually every culture in the world has stressed the importance of fitness and exercise. The link between the body and mind and disease is strong in both Eastern and Western societies. The ancient Greeks paid homage to their athletes and stressed the value of exercise as highly for students as academic pursuits. All Oriental cultures place high value on exercise and fitness; it was the Chinese monks who developed the martial art form of kung fu.
Western religions also place the responsibility for the care of our bodies squarely on our own shoulders. Look up Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians in the Bible and you’ll read that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. We are entrusted with the care of that body. And physical fitness is an important aspect of that care.
You’ll begin as a patient dutifully taking your medicine, but I hope you will continue as a fit person who is “hooked” on the benefits of exercise. Like many who have gone before you, you just might wind up singing its praises.
Ironically, when I took the President’s Fitness Test back in the 1950s when I was in elementary school, I flunked badly. I couldn’t run the mile in 10 minutes, I couldn’t do the required push-ups and sit-ups, or any of the other physical tests. Quite bluntly, I was a pathetically out-of-shape kid who grew up to be an out-of-shape adult. As I’ve stated earlier, I didn’t welcome the idea of entering the cardiac rehab program. But once I got into it, I never stopped. And today I’m in better physical condition than I’ve ever been in my life. When I tell people that I feel better than I did when I was in my twenties, I’m not exaggerating.
Here’s some very good news for those who might rate a workout in the gym just above having one’s stomach pumped and just below watching the paint peel off a wall. It takes very little exercise to achieve a heart-healthy status. We will get into the details of that in the pages to come, but I just wanted to let you know right off the bat that you’re not going to be asked to become a marathon runner.
