CHOOSING RIGHT FOODS: WHAT’S YOUR EATING STYLE
Nationwide, there are at least five styles of eating, according to a 1982 study by the Marketing Science Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Community Nutrition Institute in Washington, D.C.
1. The meat eaters. They are the last of the meat-and-potato Americans. They take meat – mostly beef-for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also eat plenty of eggs, sausage, TV dinners, and hot dogs. Hence, they have the highest consumption of fat and cholesterol.
2. People on the go. They eat away from home more than any other group. They consume lots of dairy products, especially yogurt, cheese, and butter. They also eat whole grains, but few sweets and below-average amounts of vegetables, fruits, beans, and nuts.
3. All mixed up. They skip the most meals, but when they do eat, they eat away from home. They go for convenience foods -TV dinners, frozen pot pies, cake mixes, presweetened cereals, donuts, cookies, candy, bacon, potato chips and soft drinks. They have the poorest diet of any group.
4. Conscientious eaters. They eat what most experts consider a healthy diet-more than average amounts of beans, nuts, whole grains, and low levels of cholesterol, red meats, salt, and processed foods. They eat most of their meals at home.
5. Healthy eaters. They eat the most vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Like Conscientious Eaters, they reduce cholesterol, sweets, total fat, and red meats. Instead, they eat lots of chicken, turkey, and tuna. They love bananas, cantaloupe, whole-wheat bread, broccoli, carrots, and cucumbers, but they do not eat a lot of beans.
