SEEKING THE CAUSE OF INSOMNIA
As we’ve seen, there are many possible causes of insomnia. If you were referred to a sleep disorders clinic, you would be taken through a detailed questionnaire covering your medical history and general health, state of mind, relationships, past history, eating and drinking habits, and recent life, as well as your actual sleep patterns.
Your sleeping arrangements are also important; you’d be asked where you sleep, who with, and about your relationship with that person. (Your sleeping partner, if you have one, would probably be invited along as well.) In this way a very complete picture would be built up, in order to disentangle what’s causing or contributing to your insomnia.
Sometimes quite simple answers are rapidly foundtoo much coffee-drinking for example. Sometimes the reasons are more worrying, like alcoholism or drug addiction. Very often the causes relate to emotional stress, including worry about the insomnia itself.
In certain cases, you might be asked to spend a couple of nights in a sleep laboratory. You’d spend one night acclimatizing, and on the second you’d be wired up to have your brainwaves charted during the night. Through computer analysis a hypnogram would be produced, a summary diagram of your sleep pattern, showing how much of the night you spend in sleep and how much awake, when you are awake and for how long, and also the quality of your sleep. It would show how much time you were spending in deep slow-wave sleep, transitional sleep, and REM sleep. Without sufficient slow-wave sleep you might not feel completely rested; while if you were short on REM sleep you might also feel mentally tired.
In a sleep clinic, once a detailed assessment has been made, a strategy would be worked out with you for improving your sleep. In this book you can be your own sleep clinician, asking yourself what applies to you, and what you can do about it. And probably the first thing a sleep expert would do would be to ensure that you’ve had a thorough medical check-up.
