WHY BDD MATTERS: PSYCHIATRIC PROBLEM
Body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD, is a painful yet underrecognized psychiatric disorderone in which normal-looking or even attractive people are preoccupied with one or more defects or flaws in their appearance. What’s unusual about the defect is that it isn’t visibleor is hardly visibleto others. People with this disorder may, for example, think that their hair is too curly, too straight, or too thin. Or that they have “veins” on their cheeks, scars on their nose, or skin that’s too red or too pale. Or that their nose is too big, their lips too thin, their hips too big, or their breasts too small. Any body part can be the focus of concern. In reality they look fine. Often they have no defect at all. If they do have a flaw, it’s generally minimalsomething other people don’t particularly notice. When I meet someone with BDD, I can’t figure out what the supposed defect is by looking at them. Other people can’t either. The “defects” are more in their minds than their bodies.People with BDD not only focus on a defect that others don’t noticethey think about it excessively. They worry. They obsess. It causes them emotional pain. And it interferes with their life.
BDD is an intriguing disorder. How can someone with no perceptible flaw, or only a minimal flaw, in his or her appearance focus so excessively on something others don’t notice How can an attractive young woman like Jennifer think she looks monstrously uglythat she’s “one of the ugliest people in the whole world”
The good news is that BDD is becoming better knownby professionals and the public alike. The bad news is that so many people are still unfamiliar with BDD and are unaware that it’s a common and treatable disorder. Many people with BDD have gone from doctor to doctordermatologists, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, psychiatristswithout ever finding out that BDD was their problem. Many professionals and laypersons still haven’t heard of BDD. Even though this is changing, BDD is still underrecognized.
