WHY BDD MATTERS: BDD RESEARCHES
When I started my research, BDD was virtually unknown, even though it’s been described for more than 100 years. I myself knew very little about it until some of my patients were courageous enough to reveal their concerns. To learn more about BDD, I’ve conducted lengthy interviews with hundreds of people with the disorder, the largest sample of this kind. I’ve also treated hundreds of people with BDD. With other researchers, I’ve done many additional studies of BDD, which provide the basis for much of the information in this book.
I wrote this book because BDD causes so much suffering, isn’t rare, and yet is still very underrecognized. It’s a serious and often devastating illness that can even lead to suicide. We all need to know that it exists, how to identify it, and what treatments work. Many of my patients have struggled for years with their
obsession, having no idea that it’s a known disorder with a name and available treatment. Many are relieved to learn they have an identifiable disorder and that they aren’t alone in their suffering. And many have significantly benefited from the treatments I’ll describemedications known as serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SRIs, or SSRIs) and a type of therapy known as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). With these treatments, some people improve partially; others describe their response as miraculous.
This is a new frontier: we still have much to learn about BDD. Research on BDD is perhaps 30 to 40 years behind that of other major psychiatric disorders, such as depression. But even though our knowledge is incomplete, there’s a great deal we already know. I’ll describe what’s known about BDDwhat patients experience, what I and other researchers have learned about it, what treatments are helpful, and how you can help someone with BDD. I will also grapple with some complex questions that have no clear answers but which people often ask: What causes it Is it related to other psychiatric disorders How does it compare to the “normal” appearance concerns most of us have I hope I convey what my patients would want you to know. I also hope that BDD sufferers and their family members will use this book to identify and understand their symptoms and seek effective treatment, for there is hope for BDD sufferers. As Jane said to me, “I can’t imagine any suffering greater than this. If I had a choice, I’d rather have cancer. You need to tell people about BDD. Tell them this is a serious disorder.”
