WHY BDD MATTERS: PATIENTS WITH BDDDOCTORS EXPERIENCE
One woman hadn’t told her husband about her appearance concerns, even though they’d been married 50 years. “It’s a barrier between us,” she said. “It’s something I think about a lot, and that I get upset about, but I’ve never been able to share it with my husband. Even though he’s a very understanding person, I’m afraid he wouldn’t understand. This is my one secret.”
As Cassandra said, “If only I could tell someone what this is about!” Her words reflected what so many people with BDD feel: “I feel so incredibly ridiculous and vain! I also have a feeling of humiliation and shame. I’m miserable, but I can’t explain it. It’s such a secret. It’s as painful as cancer, but I can’t tell anyone and get support.”
BDD isn’t rare. Secrecy and shame are part of the reason BDD is under-recognized and underdiagnosed. Researchers have found that about 1% of people in the general population have BDD, although studies of students report far higher rates (as high as 13%). BDD is also fairly common in people who receive dermatologic treatment or cosmetic surgery. Taken together, these studies indicate that BDD affects millions of people in the United States alone, and that it’s at least as common as many other well-known psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, manic depressive illness, panic disorder, and anorexia nervosa. BDD affects people of all socioeconomic strata and from all walks of life. BDD also occurs around the worldin Japan and other Asian countries, the Middle East, South America, Europe, Canada, Africa, Australia and other countries and continents.
