ASTHMA PREVENTION IN CHILDREN USING COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE: HYPNOSIS
A much deeper form of relaxation is hypnosis. Naturally they appeared wary – the history of hypnosis is very chequered, as it has been practiced by charlatans, frauds and tricksters. The situation is very different today and hypnosis is rapidly gaining respectability and is widely used in many medical conditions. The state of hypnosis is basically a changed level of awareness or consciousness somewhere between being fully awake and asleep. It is a level which is very pleasant and extremely relaxing.
Most people when they are asked if they have ever been hypnotized will answer ‘no’, but they are nearly always mistaken. Almost everyone has at some time been in a hypnotic state without recognizing it. Childhood day-dreaming – often so real to the child that the imagined situation takes the place of ordinary reality – is essentially self-hypnosis. In adult life a common example is when driving down a familiar road you may suddenly realize that you have traveled several miles without being able to remember anything of that part of the journey. If you have a passenger at the time he or she would be able to testify that you had driven perfectly competently.
Theatrical acts often show hypnosis in an amusing light, when people appear to be made to do all kinds of weird things either against their will or certainly out of character. This is actually an illusion, as there is no way anyone can be hypnotized if they don’t want to be and similarly no one can be made to say or do things which are offensive or wrong. Furthermore, you can always come out of the hypnotic state at any time, so there is never the situation as on stage where a character is wandering round in a trance waiting for someone to say the magic word to release them! It is common to be aware of noises from outside the room or simple sensations like shoes being too tight, but these seem somehow distant or removed. Hypnosis does not involve losing or giving up control. The experience is under your control and yours alone, and the process can teach a degree of control over mind and body that is not there for most of us in the ordinary waking state. It is in fact one of the most relaxing, pleasant and comfortable experiences you can have.
Once the basic hypnotic state is achieved it is then possible to learn the technique of self-hypnosis, so that you can put yourself ‘under’. Simon’s parents were convinced about the possible benefits of hypnosis but they still couldn’t understand how it could be performed on a child or how they could learn it themselves.
They brought Simon into the surgery and I settled him into a comfortable chair, allowing his parents to remain at the back of the room. Laying a hand on his shoulder I asked him to close his eyes and imagine he was playing on his favourite beach. Slowly, by asking him to take deep breaths, Simon became more and more relaxed until he reached a state of hypnosis. I was then able to make him feel so happy that his breathing became calm and rhythmical.
With Simon so relaxed his mind was in a very receptive mood, and I then focused his thoughts solely on his asthma, suggesting that much of his problem lay in being a worrier. A typical example was that his attacks were precipitated by returning to school. If he could become calmer and less anxious then his tendency to wheeze would disappear. As well as relaxation it is also possible under hypnosis to induce positive thinking and this I did with Simon by asking him to repeat five times: ‘I am not going to have any more asthma attacks and my breathing is going to stay normal.’
