ASTHMA IN CHILDHOOD: RELAXATION
Any approach to this anxiety must centre on relaxation. The fear aroused by the approach or the actual experience of an attack of asthma causes tension. This can be felt in the muscles around the neck, the shoulders and the chest. It is also likely that it is reflected in the muscles around the airways and this is why increasing tension does escalate the distress produced by an attack. Being aware of tension is the first step to relieving it. Each muscle group can be taught to be tensed and then deliberately relaxed and techniques that are learnt when the asthma is quiet can be brought into use when wheezing starts.
‘How on earth can I teach a 10 year old to relax’ asked Simon’s mother when I suggested this. It is surprising how easy it is to achieve this in children and how receptive they are to this approach. In Simon’s case you could see the tension in his posture, as the tightening of his shoulder and neck was making him round-shouldered and hunched up, so his chest muscles were being constricted. I taught him to relax these areas and allow his posture to revert back to normal. Suddenly from a rather nervous looking boy he was standing tall and erect and looked generally more confident. On subsequent occasions as soon as his wheezing started Simon was able to unhunch his neck and shoulder muscles thus allowing his chest to fully expand. The most sophisticated use of relaxation and muscle control is in yoga and older children – particularly teenagers -can easily practice this either at home or at a local class.
Most people think of the term relaxation in relation to calming the mind, and this is a very important aspect of asthma control. Some doctors even go as far as prescribing tranquillizers -which is totally wrong in my opinion – but it does confirm the point that remaining relaxed is vital.
