ASTHMA IN CHILDHOOD: PREVENTION USING COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE
No one likes the idea of taking drugs on a long-term basis, and because of this many people are turning to complementary – or alternative – medicine to provide a different approach. The thought of giving your own children regular daily medication is equally disturbing and parents usually ask if there is any way this can be avoided. Personally, I am a great advocate of non-drug therapy and will recommend a suitable course of treatment whenever possible. The only proviso I have is this: asthma is a serious condition, and conventional medicine can offer every child virtually complete freedom from attacks using a sensible and logical treatment plan. You should certainly think twice before varying from this plan as this is a decision taken on behalf of your child which he or she has no power to understand or refuse.
My advice is to use alternative methods only for prevention and for mild asthma attacks. When a child has a severe wheeze this is potentially dangerous and it is vital to use a method of treatment that is guaranteed to work. If the breathing is very distressed I would always stabilize the condition using conventional medication first. This is mainly because natural methods do tend to be more gradual in onset and speed is vital when the asthma is severe.
When your child has been free of a wheeze for some time then it would be safe to introduce an alternative therapy with careful reductions of the drugs. If this can be undertaken with the help of your doctor then so much the better, although I know full well that many GPs still have very rigid and old-fashioned views about anything at variance with their own narrow training.
If used in this way then there are several non-drug therapies that are excellent and certainly worth trying. Simon, the 10 year old we have been following, always had a problem with his asthma in the few days before returning to school. His mother also commented that as soon as an attack starts he becomes very frightened and upset. This anxiety is very common in all children with asthma, and relieving it would go halfway to allowing them to lead a normal life.
