AVOIDING CAUSES OF ASTHMA IN CHILDHOOD: ANIMALS
How can you tell if the family cat, dog, guinea-pig, parrot or whatever is to blame It is only in very few instances that an animal allergy is the only cause for asthma and often it is only one among many. Before making any decision that would cause distress, some sort of trial separation must be arranged. While holidays away from home are the most convenient way they are not ideal as the lack of the family pet is only one of many environmental changes that take place. It is preferable to arrange for the animal to be put into a cattery or kennels while the child stays at home and every other facet of the home environment is kept constant. Particles of animal hair and dander will lie around the house for some time in household dust so that separation will need to be accompanied by a thorough cleaning programme. If there is a dramatic improvement in the asthma then it is reasonable to assume that the pet is the major precipitating cause. In my experience, however, if the animal allergy is only one amongst several triggers, then removal of the animal is unlikely to be of great benefit.
