ASTHMA CLINICS IN CHILDREN
Different doctors will have their own particular ways of preventing and treating asthma attacks. Unfortunately, asthma can occur at any time of the day or night and it may be that the on-call doctor is used to dealing with wheezing in a different way. This can be most confusing to the parents. To avoid this happening many practices have started an asthma clinic, in which there is a common policy leading to consistent management. In other words, all children will be treated in the same way by each doctor. It also has the advantage that asthma sufferers can attend at any time if they feel all is not well. One of the major reasons for lack of control is poor inhaler technique and the clinics enable the practice nurse and doctor to correct this if necessary. Simon, who is the least stable of our cases, attended the clinic on several occasions when he was learning to use his inhalers.
If asthma is to be effectively prevented, then as well as no wheezing, there must be no night or morning coughing, no coughing with vigorous exercise, no coughing in cold air and no coughing with cigarette smoke. Only if these criteria are met can the preventive treatment be considered a success.
