ALLERGIES
More than 26 million people in the United States (about one in ten people) recognize their allergic disease, and even more people suffer, but don’t even realize that they have allergies. At times it is difficult to separate allergies from cold and flu symptoms. In general, the following symptoms are typical for those persons suffering from an allergic reaction:
Dark, swollen bags under the eyes
Irritated, red, itchy, watery eyes
Sneezing
Runny nose with thin, clear watery discharge
Itching of the roof of the mouth
Fever, chills, and muscle aches are only rarely seen with allergy. The most common allergy is “hay fever,” which is not due to hay and has no fever. It results from allergic responses to molds that grow in hay and many other places and causes the variety of symptoms noted above. Contrast with these, the symptoms of colds and flu, which are generally: sneezingit is rare with the flu but not uncommon for a cold – fever, chills, and muscle aches; and a runny nose, with thick, yellow or green discharge.
Antihistamines are the drugs of choice for allergic reactions. There are a large number of these drugs and it is difficult to tell them apart. They have broad effects, and side effects are common, but rarely serious. Stimulants (caffeine) can be used to help counter the drowsiness or sedation most of them cause. Taking them with food can reduce the stomach or intestinal side effects that some people experience. They are also used as an ingredient in many cold and flu medications, but the evidence that they provide any benefit for flu or colds is weak. They are basically all equally effective if the proper dose is given, but individuals do find that one or another may work better for them. The recommendations given reflect the results of studies of preference by the majority, more on the basis of lower side effects and a superior duration of effect than differences in effectiveness (which are small, if any).
