ALLERGIC SKIN REACTIONS
Numerous different types of skin rashes can be caused by allergic reactions to various chemicals, plants, foods, drugs, or almost anything else that may contact the skin. It is often difficult to determine the cause of a rash. Even experts must often resort to sophisticated tests or even trial-and-error testing to find the source of the problem and an effective treatment. When the rash occurs very quickly after contact, it is fairly easy to diagnose. However, in many cases, the rash takes hours or a day or two before it appears, and the connection to the agent contacting the skin and inducing the response is easily overlooked.
Rashes caused by ingestion or inhalation of offending allergens are much harder to pin down accurately. Hives is a type of rash that appears quickly and forms “bubbles” of swelling that are usually very pale in color and often surrounded by red outlines. They may be of any size and may combine, or “grow” as the reaction develops. Itching is often the first sign. The rash usually remains at a site for a few hours. Other types of rashes are more difficult to recognize. Among the most common are the “contact” reactions to poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac; but these reactions also occur after exposure to many other chemicals and products that contact the skin. In some cases the rash is due to an infection (yeast, bacteria and fungi, for example). If the cause can be determined, the treatment can be more specific.
